Website Development: 3 Items Often Overlooked
Website development is generally concerned with the foundation of a website. Many small businesses choose to create their own websites to cut costs, and it is relatively easy to do that with all the drag-and-drop templates that are available. The problem is that without a full understanding of website development standards and techniques, they are likely to miss critical elements.
Simply put, a website that is not designed to be compatible with all browsers, responsive, and built to SEO standards will not allow your business to reach its full potential.
1. Browser Compatibility
Every website and application should load quickly and flawlessly in any browser. If it doesn’t, you’re going to lose customers. Using browser-specific code can crate major UX problems in other browsers, and no one is going to download a new web browser just to use your website. At the very minimum, it must be tested in Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge, but the more, the better.
2. Responsive Design
An extremely common mistake that amateur web designers make is not making the design responsive from the start. When we say “responsive design”, we mean that the website or application responds to the user’s environment and behavior based on the screen size and resolution, orientation, and platform. This includes ensuring that it works on all mobile devices.
You probably don’t need us to tell you how crucial it is for your website to load correctly on mobile devices, but just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Statista reported that in the second quarter of 2022, mobile devices (not even including tablets) generated almost 60% percent of global website traffic. This means that if your website design doesn’t function perfectly on all mobile devices, you are almost certainly losing business.
3. Technical SEO
Most business owners know that SEO is important for content, but many don’t realize that there are technical aspects that must be completed on the development side as well. These include but are not limited to:
- Fast loading speed
- Crawlable architecture
- Code validation
- Page titles
- Meta descriptions
- Alt image tags
- Intelligent backlinks
If these back-end SEO requirements are not met, Google and other search engines will not put you high in search results and someone else will win customers that could have been yours.
